Housing needs assessment for UNHCR on the housing conditions of 185 families
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Habitat for Humanity Macedonia established a partnership with a goal of assisting 185 families with former refugee status in improving their housing conditions, including families that have a family member with a refugee status.
The housing needs assessment for UNHCR project targets refugees that arrived in Macedonia from Kosovo during the crisis in 1999. Most refugee families are Roma, located in Skopje, in the municipality of Shuto Orizari. The objective of the first phase of the project is an assessment analysis of the housing conditions of 185 targeted families, including housing needs identification, categorization and design of the support models in providing segmented housing assistance. This will include construction technical advice for simple, decent and affordable housing, legal advice and financial literacy training. Activities will include training and consultation regarding maintenance of homes, their renovation/rehabilitation and purchasing of construction materials. Improved housing and living conditions should also make these families economically more independent and help their easier integration in the society.
