The Long-Expected Amendments to the Housing Law Adopted
After several years of Habitat Macedonia’s intensive involvement in the process of improving the relevant legal framework, the Parliament of the Republic of N. Macedonia adopted in July 2025 the long-awaited amendments to the Housing Law. With this, one of the organization’s strategic priorities has been fulfilled. Namely, Housing Law is considered an essential prerequisite for establishing more efficient instruments to address challenges in the housing sector, especially in multi-family (collective) apartment buildings.

Originally adopted in 2009, this law is a unique and irreplaceable act regulating the types of housing facilities, the management of residential buildings, the relations among individual unit owners, the ways and processes of managing and maintaining the buildings, the rights and obligations of state institutions, and many other issues in the field of housing.
Habitat Macedonia’s first initiative to amend this law dates back to 2013. Since 2018, the organization’s most senior management has been formally included in the expert teams working on the new legal solutions, and in 2022, Habitat Macedonia additionally engaged by providing technical assistance and support to the process of adopting the amendments. Throughout this entire period, a highly professional relationship was maintained with the Ministry of Transport’s department responsible for housing, regardless of the ideological orientation of the various political options governing the country during this time.
